What is a Yield Model?

7 min
Learning goal: after this lesson you'll be able to see how a project's yield is produced and whether it's sustainable, tell apart "real-profit-driven" models from "minting- or newcomer-funded" ones, and build a basic instinct for risk.
A yield model is simply "where the money this project pays you actually comes from". Whether it's earned by real skill, or by endlessly printing new tokens and using later people's money to cover earlier ones — one question makes it clear.

A yield model is the whole logic by which a protocol produces and distributes yield. Understanding it comes down to one question: where does your yield actually come from? The source of the money decides how long that yield can last.

Roughly two types:

The latter gets harder to sustain the longer it runs.

A few danger signs to watch for: a promised fixed high return, yield far beyond the protocol's real earning ability, payouts that only work if you pull more people in, and reserves holding little real asset. The more the yield detaches from real profit, the more likely it's a game of pass-the-parcel.

DYOR。There's one method: check. Use the on-chain dashboard to verify the protocol's real reserves and income, use the yield calculator to do the math, and don't let the APY figure or marketing talk set your pace. Judge yield by both the token price and the real reserves — always DYOR.

Two projects both advertise high yield. A's yield comes from solid fee-sharing and its reserves hold real assets; B's yield relies entirely on minting new tokens plus new people providing exit liquidity, with little real money on the books. The headline numbers look similar, but B can collapse the moment new money stops coming in — that's the difference a yield model makes.

Is a project whose yield relies entirely on minting always a scam?

Not necessarily, but be very cautious. Minting itself dilutes value, and without real income and reserves to back it, it's hard to sustain long term. The key is whether there's real money backing it — don't just look at the APY.

How can I quickly judge whether a yield model is trustworthy?

Ask three things: where the money comes from, whether the reserves hold real assets, and whether it can hold up if new money stops. If all three feel shaky, the risk is high. Always verify on-chain yourself.

Can I chase a yield just because the numbers look great?

No. A high APY doesn't equal net profit — if the token price drops you can end up in the red. The numbers are just the surface; the source of yield and the real reserves are what matter. Always DYOR and manage your risk.
